Report of the twentieth GAbridge project journal club, Arpil 16th, 2026

 

The twentieth GAbridge journal club took place on Thursday, April 16th, 2026. PhD student Ivana Keršić presented a preprint of the paper "Paleogenomic insight into the collapse, recovery, and management of American bison" (Oppenheimer et al., 2025). The work is interesting to the group because it is a large study with numerous ancient samples of bison, a species close to cattle which the GAbridge project investigates, and is also often used as an outgroup in analyzes of cattle populations. Also, some samples analyzed in the work are very old (up to 20,000 BP), and the group discussed the authors' methodology of working with ancient DNA, given that we also have very old samples in the project.
